TO MAKE ACCENTS AND OTHER DIACRITICS

IN A MACINTOSH:

accents: option e (pressed at the same time) and the vowel

example: á= option e a

é= option e e

ñ: option n (pressed at the same time) and n

¿: option shift ? (pressed at the same time)

¡: option ! (pressed at the same time)

IN A PC:

There are multiple ways to generate accented characters when using Microsoft Word:

The Ctrl method.

• Depress the Ctrl and the apostrophe keys. Let go. Type the vowel that you would like accented.
• To type the ñ depress Ctrl and Shift and the ~ keys. Let go. Type n. This character will automatically become ñ.
• To type capitalized accented characters, depress Ctrl and the apostrophe keys. Let go. Type Shift and the vowel you would like accented.

The numeric method. Hold down the Alt key while entering the following number combinations on the numeric keypad:

• ALT + 0225 = á
• ALT + 0233 = é
• ALT + 0237 = í
• ALT + 0243 = ó
• ALT + 0250 = ú
• ALT + 0241 = ñ

Uniquely Spanish punctuation marks (¿ and ¡).

Numeric:

· ALT + 0191 = ¿

· ALT + 0161 = ¡

Set language:

· Select the text in your document that is in Spanish.

· Go to the Tools menu.

· Scroll over Language à Set language…

· Select Spanish (Spain-Modern Sort) from the list.

· Type ! or ?. These characters will automatically convert to ¡ and ¿ respectively if you have set the language correctly.

*The numeric methods (using the number keypad and ALT) will function in any program and are not limited to MS Word.

*If you use a laptop, use the Function key (often blue and abbreviated as FN) to activate the numeric keypad. The keypad numbers are blue and appear on other keys on the right-hand side of your keyboard.
