Purpose of the Course:
The final course in the required language sequence, Spanish 21 is designed to improve the language skills of the student through grammar review, conversation, exposure to selected readings and the examination of Hispanic culture.
Course Objectives:
1. To review major grammatical
patterns.
2. To expand vocabulary and
idiomatic structures.
3. To develop further the four basic
language skills(listening, speaking, reading
and
writing)
4. To broaden the student's
acquaintance with basic cultural patterns of Spain and Latin
America.
5. To foster a positive attitude
about the study of foreign language, literature and
culture.

Class Attendance:
All
students are expected to attend every class session. This is essential for
you to succeed in the class. A student who has more than two unexcused
absences during the term will
have his/her final grade lowered accordingly. Each unexcused absence over 2 will cause your
final grade to drop by one point. Three tardies will amount to one
absence. Class attendance will
also affect your participation and preparation grade which is 10% of the final
grade. If you are not in class then you cannot participate so your
participation grade will be zero fpr that day. It is the responsibility of the
student to present evidence of
illness (a note from the infirmary, for example) or any other type of absence
which he or she believes the instructor may consider "excused." A
freshman who exceeds 6 absences or an upperclassman who exceeds 10 absences for
any reason (excused or unexcused) will be in violation of the maximum established
by the university (see p. 40
of the 2008-09 Furman University Catalog) and will be dropped with a grade of "F" as well.
Class Preparation and Participation:
I
give a lot of importance to your class participation since this is a foreign
language class and it is essential that you practice orally. It is 10% of
the final grade and it means coming to class prepared with all the assignments
completed, ready to speak, contribute, answer questions and participate in
classroom activities in a positive way. In class you should try to speak
only in Spanish and encourage
your classmates to do so as well when working in pairs and small groups, which
we will do most of the class time. I value effort and positive attitude
rather than perfection, it is normal to make mistakes when we are speaking
another language, what is important is to try to speak it. It will be
difficult at first but it will get easier as the course progresses. You need to
realize that I cannot evaluate your oral work unless I hear you speaking in
class and that your participation will help you in the oral part of the final
exam. If you want to know how you are doing in this portion of the class,
please come to see me two weeks after classes have started and in the course of the semester.
Assignment Information:
General
information: The different
chapters will be covered generally during the days indicated in the syllabus (Programa
general), but I will assign specific pages, exercises and compositions
daily. You must prepare the material and complete the assignments before coming
to class. I will collect homework regularly. Assignments must be turned in the day they are
due otherwise you get a zero.
Homework missed due to an excused absence may be turned in for credit
within three days after returning to class. Be certain that you have the
telephone numbers of several classmates so that you may obtain homework
assignments when you miss class both for excused and unexcused absences. It
is your responsibility to learn of possible changes in assignments as well as
the instructor's notification concerning quizzes.
Cuaderno
de ejercicios: You should do
the exercises corresponding to each chapter as we are studying them. This is to
provide you with further practice, but we will not correct these exercises in
class. I will provide you with an ÒAnswer KeyÓ so that you can self-correct the
exercises after you have done them. I will usually collect the Cuaderno on the days that we have a quiz or an exam. and
give you a plus (+), check (
) or minus (-) that will be part of the homework grade. A student
that does not do the exercises or does not have the ÒCuadernoÓ when I ask for
it will receive a zero.
Web
Site: The web site for En contacto (http://Encontacto.heinle.com)
includes self-correcting grammar and oral practice, web activities and links to
related sites, chapter by chapter. The self-correcting grammar quizzes called
ÒAuto-pruebasÓ can be a good practice.
Study Time:
Students
generally are expected to spend twice as much time outside of class in
preparation as they spend in class. The typical student in the Spanish 21
class, then, should plan to study two to three hours outside of class to
prepare for daily lessons. On assigning homework, writing assignments and
special projects, the professor assumes this is the time students spend on
their daily work outside of class.
Tests:
All
tests will be announced and must be taken on the scheduled day. There will
be no make up for quizzes; major tests can only be taken out of the scheduled
time if student supplies a note from the appropriate Dean certifying an excused
absence.
Academic
Integrity:
Integrity
gives the educational enterprise its legitimacy. Honesty, respect, and personal
responsibility are principles that guide academic life at Furman, in and out of
the classroom. Academic misconduct in any form (plagiarism, cheating,
inappropriate collaboration, and other efforts to gain an unfair academic
advantage) threatens the values of the campus community and will have severe
consequences, such as failure in the course, and/or suspension or dismissal
from the university.
If
you have any question about what constitutes plagiarism or any other form of
academic misconsdiuct, it is your responsibility to consult with me so that you
will fully understand what I expect of you in this course. If you have any
doubts, ask! You should also be familiar with the Academic Integrity &
Plagiarism and Academic
Integrity at Furman materials available at www.furman.edu>academics>academic integrity information. FurmanÕs policy on
academic dishonesty can be found at:
http://furman_notes.furman.edu/p&p.nsf>Standard>Search>121.5.
Students
with Disabilities:
Students
with disabilities who need academic accommodations should contact Gina Parris,
Disabilities Services Coordinator (Phone: 294 2320), in the ADM 207. After having a conference with her,
contact me during my office hours. You need to do this early in the term.
Tutoring:
Furman
provides cost-free tutoring for students who request it. If you need a tutor,
see Barbara Foltz in the Office of Academic Assistance (Phone: 294 2110) on the
ground floor of the Duke Library.
