Tropical Ecology has been taught during every other winter term (2006, 2008, ...) in Costa Rica. We will change to every other May beginning in 2010. This course has three objectives. The primary objective is to appreciate the richness, complexity, and diversity of tropical habitats. To accomplish this goal, we will study lowland tropical rain forest, cloud forest, and dry deciduous forest. After this experience, you should appreciate the diversity and "connectedness" of life, man's dependency on the global ecosystem, the frailty of these habitats in the face of human expansion, and our responsibility to preserve these unique and irreplaceable treasures. The second objective is to learn some ecology: the study of relationships between organisms and their environment. Through a series of lectures presented during the fall and during the trip,and through independent and group field experiments conducted in the forests, you will learn: 1) about the structure and dynamics of these communities and their inhabitants, and 2) how to conduct a scientific, experimental field investigation. The third objective is to experience Costa Rican culture and appreciate the diversity of the human condition. By examining other cultures, we can reflect on the positive and negative attributes of our own.
