The Live WebCam of the Furman Theatre Production of

During the run of Antigone, the department experimented with a new camera recently purchased by Furman that allows the automatic updated images to be "broadcast" on a web page. With the expert assistance of DuBose Egleston from the Information Services department, the camera was installed in The Playhouse and a brief period of testing was conducted to work out the details and design the presentation pages. Announcements were sent out to everyone we knew and the information was posted in numerous locations.

Screen captures of some of the images from the web cam are appended to the bottom of this page. They were able to give a sort of "slide show" of the play performance as it unfolded. Viewers could see the design elements and the patterns of the movement and staging of the show. The department is encouraged by the responses to the experiment to explore options leading to a live realtime video with sound presentation of one of our shows.

This new translation of Antigone was done by Furman Classics Professors Chris Blackwell and Richard Prior. It was one of the regular productions offered by the Department of Theatre Arts at Furman University and is a part of the two month long celebration of Greek culture - The Hellenika '99. The production was directed by Doug Cummins. Costume and Make-up design was by Kathleen Gossman. Scenic and Lighting design was by Rhett Bryson.

In presenting this translation and production of Antigone, it was our hope that we could allow Sophocles' characters to speak clearly to a contemporary audience, and that the audience would be drawn into the dreadful pathos and the beauty of this very ancient play.
