The distinction between a butterfly and a moth has long been argued.
Separating members of Order Lepidoptera into these two categories cannot
be easily justified with scientific data. Nevertheless, many in the English-speaking
portions of the world would agree to call members of certain families "butterflies"
and members of the remaining families "moths." The site you are viewing
follows this convention and lists these North American "butterfly" families:
Hesperiidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae, Riodinidae, Libytheidae,
Heliconiidae, Nymphalidae, Apaturidae, Satyridae, and Danaidae.
