GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman head women's soccer coach Brian Lee announced the signing of Katie Carson and Kristen Brexel to national letters-of-intent Monday. "I am thrilled to welcome these two fine student-athletes to our program," said Lee. "Both of them should contribute early and be a fixture for Furman women's soccer in the next four years."
Katie Carson enters the Lady Paladin program after four years at Greensboro Day School in Greensboro, North Carolina. Carson helped lead Greensboro Day to three state championships, a 67-1-2 record in three years, and a national #1 ranking in the USA Today/Umbro poll in 1998. Carson was a second team all-state selection as a junior and led the Greensboro Twisters club team to three straight state championships. Carson has also been a member of the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (ODP) team for the past three years.
Kristen Brexel, the sister of rising senior and current team captain Tara Brexel, is a forward from Roswell, Georgia. She is a member of the Georgia ODP Team and the Roswell Lady Santos club team. Brexel has helped guide the Santos to five consecutive division championships. Brexel is a product of Roswell High School, where she was the team leader in goals and assists in 1998.
Brexel and Carson are both expected to contribute early, and along with redshirt freshman Lindsey Facciolo, Lee expects the 1999 freshman class to play a big role next season. With ten starters and seven all-conference selections returning, Furman looks to be one of the early favorites to challenge for the Southern Conference title in 1999.
