BROWNLEE NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-SOUTHEAST; TURNER, KILLEY EARN SECOND TEAM HONORS
GREENVILLE, SC -- Three members of the best Furman women's soccer team in school history were named All-Southeast Region on Tuesday by the NSCAA, including first team honors for midfielder Kaye Brownlee.
Brownlee becomes the first Lady Paladin to earn first team honors in Furman's six-year women's soccer history. Forward Melissa Turner and Defender Lauren Killey earned second team honors, also topping the highest previous accolade in Furman history. Prior to 1999, Furman placed two players on the NSCAA third team as Liz Bielefeld and Brownlee were lauded each of the past two seasons.
Furman finished the season 20-3, setting Furman and Southern Conference records for overall wins. The Lady Paladins also set records for goals, assists, points, conference wins, wins at home, and wins on the road. The Lady Paladins, the Southern Conference regular season and tournament champions, earned their first NCAA Tournament bid in history.
Brownlee, a sophomore from Kennesaw, Ga., led Furman with 13 goals and 17 assists on the season. She set a Furman single season records for goals and points. She missed her own single season assist record by two assists. Brownlee finished the season fourth in the nation in assists after placing second in her freshman season.
Melissa Turner, a sophomore from Marietta, Ga., also scored 13 goals this season to set the Furman single season goals mark. She spent the first half the year as a central defender before moving to forward midway through the season.
Lauren Killey, a sophomore from Austin, Texas, anchored a stingy Furman defense that finished 15th in the nation in team defense with a 0.74 team goals against average. She also added an offensive punch as she recorded nine assists on the season attacking on a regular basis.
Brownlee was one of only three players not from 14-time national champion or defending nation champion Florida on the first team as the Tar Heels and Gators both placed four players on the team.
Last week, head coach Brian Lee was named NSCAA Southeast Region Coach-of-the-Year and is one of six finalists for the national coach-of-the-year. | ||
