BROWNLEE, TURNER NAMED TO SOCCER BUZZ ALL-SOUTHEAST REGION TEAM; BRIAN LEE NAMED REGION COACH-OF-THE-YEAR
GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman's Kaye Brownlee and Melissa Turner were named to the Soccer Buzz All-Southeast Region team on Thursday as Brownlee was a first team choice and Turner was selected to the second team. Head coach Brian Lee captured Southeast Region coach-of-the-year honors.
Brownlee and Turner add Soccer Buzz all-region honors to a growing list of post-season awards for the two sophomores. Brownlee is a NSCAA first team All-American and first team All-Southeast Region pick, as well as a first team All-Southern Conference selection. Turner has already been named second team NSCAA All-Southeast Region and to the All-Southern Conference first team.
"Kaye and Melissa were instrumental in helping this program reach a new level this season," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "They have now both been recognized by two different awards committees, which is a testament to the type of players they are."
Soccer Buzz Southeast Region coach-of-the-year honors is the third coaching award Lee has received this fall. The NSCAA Southeast Region coach-of-the year, Lee is among six current finalists for the NSCAA national coach-of-the-year. He also garnered Southern Conference coach-of-the-year honors for the third time in five seasons.
Brownlee, a sophomore from Kennesaw, Ga., led Furman with 13 goals and 17 assists on the season. She set a Furman single season records for goals and points. She missed her own single season assist record by two assists. Brownlee finished the season fourth in the nation in assists after placing second in her freshman season.
Melissa Turner, a sophomore from Marietta, Ga., also scored 13 goals this season to set the Furman single season goals mark. She spent the first half the year as a central defender before moving to forward midway through the season. She has been honored by both Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA as a forward.
Furman finished the season 20-3, setting Furman and Southern Conference records for overall wins. The Lady Paladins also set records for goals, assists, points, conference wins, wins at home, and wins on the road. The Lady Paladins, the Southern Conference regular season and tournament champions, earned their first NCAA Tournament bid in history.
The Southeast Region contains 15-time and current national champion North Carolina, '98 national champion Florida, ACC powers Duke, Clemson, Wake Forest, and N.C. State, as well as SEC powers Georgia and South Carolina, among others.
Brownlee was one of only three players not from North Carolina or Florida on the first team as the Tar Heels placed six and Gators placed four on the first team.
