FURMAN'S BROWNLEE NAMED FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR GINGER DENISON HONORED WITH ELIZABETH BLACKWELL AWARD
GREENVILLE, South Carolina Sophomore soccer All-American Kaye Brownlee was honored as the Furman Female Athlete of the Year at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet Thursday night in Hartness Pavillion. In addition, senior Ginger Denison earned the Elizabeth Blackwell Academic Award, and team MVP's were awarded in all nine women's sports.
As a member of the Furman women's soccer team last fall, Brownlee, a product of Kennesaw, Ga., was named first-team All-America, GTE Academic All-America, Southern Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player, and first-team All-Southern Conference, while leading the Lady Paladins with 13 goals and 17 assists. She finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in assists and led her team to its best season ever with a 20-3 record and NCAA Tournament berth.
Denison, a senior from Greensboro, N.C., majoring in chemisty, will graduate next week with a 3.91 grade point average. In her academic career, Denison has earned both Truman and Goldwater Scholarships and, in the coming months, will spend her second summer doing research at Los Alamos Labs in Los Alamos, N.M. In the fall, she will begin work on a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry at Indiana University. A hurdler for the Furman track team, Denison was also a five-time All-Southern Conference selection in track.
