Furman Women's Soccer Defeats Davidson 2-1;
Earns First-Ever NCAA Tournament Bid
Greensboro, N.C -- Kaye Brownlee scored at the 146:40 mark in the fourth overtime period to lift the Furman women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Davidson in the 1999 Southern Conference Tournament Championship. With the win, the Lady Paladins improve to 20-2 and earn the first NCAA Tournament berth in the six year history of the program.
The first round of the NCAA Tournament is slated for Wednesday, November 10. Furman will discover who their opponent will be during the selection show tonight at 10 p.m.
Brownlee's goal came as she took a pass from Katie Carson and drilled
a shot into the backof the net. Only 3:40 remained in the final overtime
period.
Senior Tara Brexel put the Lady Paladins on the board first as
she collected a free ball in the box and drilled it past Davidson keeper
Winnie Corrigan at the 16:16 mark.
Early in the second half, Davidson evened the score at 1-1 as Ginny Dye knocked in a Heather Maloney cross at the 49:5 mark.
"This was an exciting match between two solid teams," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "I am really excited for our girls. They have worked hard all season and now it is time to see what we can do in the NCAA Tournament."
Furman improves to 20-2 on the season as the Lady Paladins win their 11th straight match.
Kaye Brownlee was named tournament MVP, while Melissa Sutton, Tara Brexel, and Katie Carson were named to the all-tournament team.
Furman, who has won two Southern Conference regular season titles,
wins its first-ever Southern Conference tournament title. Furman
has now won three straight matches over Davidson. The Wildcats conclude
their season with a 11-8 record. The Lady Paladins set a Southern
Conference record for wins in a season with 20.
