Furman Women's Soccer Blanks Princeton 2-0
Clemson, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team shutout Princeton 2-0 Sunday in the Clemson/Nike Invitational behind the stellar play of the Lady Paladin defense and freshman goalkeeper Jessi Anucinski.
Furman got on the board in the first half with a Kathy Gaertner goal at the 10:09 mark. Gaertner received a Katie Carson pass near the left side of the goal box and slid the ball past Lady Tiger keeper Jordan Rettig.
Sarah Tollick finished off the Paladin scoring with a goal at the 47:28 mark in the second half off a Katie Carson, Melissa Sutton assist.
Furman freshman goalkeeper Jessi Anucinski, making only her second collegiate start, notched eight saves in the shutout. For the tournament, Anucinski recorded 17 saves as Furman's opponents attempted 45 shots in 195 minutes. Anucinski was named to the Clemson Nike Invitational all-tournament team along with Melissa Turner and Bridgett Giles.
Furman, ranked 7th in the Southeast by Soccer Buzz and 8th by the NSCAA, is off to the best start in school history with a 4-1 mark. Princeton, who lost to Clemson 1-0 on Friday, falls to 0-2 on the season.
The Lady Paladins will host Troy State and Canisius in the Umbro Kickoff Classic beginning this Friday.
