Furman Women's Soccer Falls to Richmond in Overtime

Clemson, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle to Richmond 1-0 in overtime Friday in the first match of the Clemson Nike Invitational.

Richmond's Brooke Sands knocked in a rebound off her own shot with just 28 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to propel the Lady Spiders to victory.

Furman freshman goalkeeper Jessi Anucinski was forced into action at the opening kickoff as starter Melissa Barnes was injured late in warm-ups. Anucinski recorded nine saves and held the Spiders scoreless for 104 minutes. In addition, Furman leading scorer and Soccer Buzz preseason Southern Conference player-of-the-year Kaye Brownlee left the match in the 67th minute and did not return. It is unknown the extent of either injury.

Furman was on the defensive for most of the match as Richmond outshot the Lady Paladins 29-5.

Furman falls to 3-1, while Richmond improves to 3-1. The Lady Paladins are back in action at the Clemson Nike Invitational Sunday at 11 a.m. against Princeton.
