FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS 1-0 TO UCF IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team saw its incredible 1999 season come to a close Wednesday as the Lady Paladins were defeated 1-0 by Central Florida in the first round of the 1999 NCAA Women's College Cup.

The Golden Knights advance to face #2 seed and 14-time national champion North Carolina on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The match's lone goal was scored by UCF's Claire Kohake at the 39:41 mark. Golden Knight midfielder Cally Howell dribbled to the right corner and crossed a perfectly placed ball to the center of the box where Kohake knocked in what proved to be the game-winner.

Furman, which played four overtimes in Sunday's Southern Conference championship match, had its chances but was unable to connect. The Lady Paladins, who have the eighth most potent scoring attack in the nation, were shutout for only the second time all season. This was the first loss the Lady Paladins suffered in regulation as Furman's two previous losses came in overtime.

The loss snaps an 11-match winning steak for Furman, while Central Florida improves its unbeaten streak to 11 matches.

Furman, in its sixth season of women's soccer, concluded the season with a 20-3 record. The 1999 season was the best-ever for Furman as the Lady Paladins set a school and Southern Conference record for wins in a season.

"We had a great season," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Our girls have nothing to hang their heads about. We came out and played hard today and that is all I can ask of them."

Central Florida improves to 16-5-1 with a date with the Tar Heels ahead on Saturday.
