FURMAN WOMEN'S SOCCER EDGES WOFFORD 3-2 IN OT
GREENVILLE, SC -- Melissa Turner scored twice, including the overtime game-winner, to propel the Furman women's soccer team to a 3-2 overtime victory over Wofford Tuesday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
Furman started slow and fell behind 1-0 in the first half. Wofford's Thea Moen scored at the 32:02 mark to put the Terriers ahead.
The Lady Paladins came out strong in the second half as they scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of the period. Kaye Brownlee connected on the first goal as she took a Melissa Sutton pass down the left endline and drilled it into the goal. Turner put Furman ahead 2-1 with a goal at the 59:31 mark off a Sarah Tollick assist. Tollick beat several Terrier defenders before sliding the pass to Turner.
Despite the Lady Paladins' domination of the first part of the second half, Wofford came back strong to tie the match as Thea Moen scored off a Heidi Best, Jenny Petrilyak double assist at the 76:51 mark. Wofford attempted only two shots during the second half.
Furman came out with offensive intensity in overtime as the ball never crossed the midfield line. Melissa Turner finally netted the game-winner after 6:08 to keep the Lady Paladins undefeated in league play.
"Wofford is a quality team," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We had to dig in to find a way to win this match. But I am proud of our girls, because we came from behind, fought hard, and won the match."
Furman junior Sarah Tollick's assist on Furman's second goal put her in fifth place on Furman's all-time scoring chart. She now has 13 goals and 17 assists for 43 points in her career.
Furman, ranked eighth in the Southeast Region in both the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz polls, improves to 10-2 overall, 4-0 Southern Conference. Wofford falls to 8-5, 2-4 SoCon.
