GREENVILLE, SC -- A Furman record four Lady Paladins were selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) Scholar Athlete South Team this week. Junior standouts Kaye Brownlee and Melissa Turner were first team choices, while senior Sarah Tollick was a second team pick, and junior Nancy Mather was a third team selection.
Only 23 Division I athletes were selected to the South Region squad, which comprises schools in all Divisions from Texas through North Carolina. Furman was one of three schools with at least four selections. They represent the first Furman womenšs soccer players to earn the award.
Kaye Brownlee is a junior Health and Exercise Science major with a 3.55 Grade Point Average (GPA). Brownlee is a two-time SoCon honor roll member and earned GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors last year. Brownlee is Furman's all-time leader in career assists with 47 and ranks third in points. She became Furman's first ever first team All American as she was an NSCAA first team selection in 1999. She was also the Southern Conference Female Athlete-of-the-Year last season.
Melissa Turner is a junior Computer Science-Mathematics major with a 3.4 GPA. Turner finished tenth in the nation in scoring in 2000 with 49 points on 18 goals and 13 assists. Turner ranks second in both career points and career goals and is on pace to become Furman's all-time leader in both categories early next season. She was an NSCAA and Soccer Buzz Southeast Region pick in 2000. She is a two-time Southern Conference honor roll selection.
Sarah Tollick is a senior Education major with a 3.37 GPA. Tollick started all 87 matches of her Furman career as she ranks first in Furman history in both career matches started and played. Tollick ranks sixth in career goals, second in assists, and fourth in points with 21 goals and 33 assists for 75 points over her career. She was a first team All-Southern Conference selection in 2000 and a second team pick in 1999. She is a three-time Southern Conference honor roll member.
Nancy Mather is a junior Sociology and Religion double major with a 3.8 GPA. Mather transferred to Furman after two seasons at Michigan. In her first season as a Lady Paladin, she made an immediate impact as Furman's starting sweeper the second half of the season. Mather played more minutes than any other Lady Paladin during the final 11 matches of the season. She earned Southern Conference honor roll honors last season.
Furman is coming off one of its best seasons ever as the Lady Paladins finished the season 20-3. Furman achieved a national ranking of 13th in two different polls this season and won the Southern Conference regular season with a perfect 9-0 league mark for the second straight year. Furman also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
