GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman women's soccer standouts Kaye Brownlee and Melissa Turner were selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Scholar Athlete All America team this week. Brownlee was a first team choice, while Turner was selected to the third team.
The teams are selected from all collegiate soccer players in all divisions of the NCAA nationwide. To be eligible, each student-athlete must be a junior, have a minimum GPA of 3.3 and be a valuable member of their team.
Kaye Brownlee is a junior Health and Exercise Science major with a 3.55 Grade Point Average (GPA). Brownlee has accumulated one of the best resume's in Furman women's athletics history with both academic and athletic honors. In addition to being a first team scholar-athlete All American this year, Brownlee was a first team scholar athlete regional choice this year, a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District pick as a sophomore, and is a two-time SoCon honor roll member.
Brownlee is now one of 11 finalists for the NSCAA/adidas College Scholar-Athlete award, which will be presented January 20, 2001 at the All America Luncheon held as part of the NSCAA Convention.
Brownlee is Furman's all-time leader in career assists with 47 and ranks third in career points. She became Furman's first ever first team All American as she was an NSCAA first team selection in 1999. She was also the Southern Conference Female Athlete-of-the-Year last season. Brownlee was a 2000 Soccer Buzz all-region choice.
Melissa Turner is a junior Computer Science-Mathematics major with a 3.4 GPA. She was also an NSCAA first team Scholar Athlete South Region selection this season. Turner finished tenth in the nation in scoring in 2000 with 49 points on 18 goals and 13 assists. She ranks second in both career points and career goals and is on pace to become Furman's all-time leader in both categories early next season. Turner was an NSCAA and Soccer Buzz Southeast Region pick in 2000. She is a two-time Southern Conference honor roll selection.
"Kaye Brownlee and Melissa Turner are two of the best all-around student-athletes in college soccer," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "That is apparent by these awards. I am proud of what these young ladies have done both on the soccer field and in the classroom over their career. Student-athletes like Kaye and Melissa donšt come around too often. They are what Furman Athletics is all about."
Furman is coming off one of its best seasons ever as the Lady Paladins finished the season 20-3. Furman achieved a national ranking of 13th in two different polls this season and won the Southern Conference regular season with a perfect 9-0 league mark for the second straight year. Furman also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
