FURMAN WOMEN DOMINATES ALL-SOUTHERN CONFERENCE VOTING;

TURGEON TABBED AS PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR AND FRESHMAN-OF-THE-YEAR

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman freshman Emily Turgeon made Southern Conference women's soccer history as she was named SoCon player-of-the-year and freshman-of-the-year on Wednesday, while Furman accounted for six of 10 spots on the all-conference first team.

Head Coach Brian Lee was named Southern Conference coach-of-the-year for the third straight season and the fourth time overall. The Lady Paladins also placed two players on the second team bringing Furman's total to eight all-conference selections, a Southern Conference record.

Turgeon, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., leads the nation in scoring with 21 goals and 17 assists for 59 points. She has set Furman single season records for goals and points in a season. She becomes the first Furman women¹s soccer player since Liz Bielefeld in 1994 to win player-of-the-year and the fourth Lady Paladin to be named freshman-of-the-year. Turgeon is also a first team All Southern Conference selection.

Joining Turgeon on the first team are Melissa Turner, Kaye Brownlee, Sarah Tollick, Lauren Killey, and Bridgett Giles.

Turner, a junior forward from Marietta, Ga., has scored 18 goals and recorded 10 assists on the year to place in the nation¹s top ten in scoring. She is second in scoring behind Turgeon in the conference. Kaye Brownlee, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., earned first team honors for the third straight year. A first team All American last season, Brownlee has recorded four goals and 10 assists this year, bringing her career assist total to 46, which places her 25th all-time in NCAA Division I history.

Senior Sarah Tollick is a first team selection for the first time in her career after being a second team pick in 1999. Tollick has started more matches in her Furman career than any Lady Paladin in history - 83. She ranks second in all-time assists and fifth in scoring for Furman. Rounding out Furman¹s first team contingent are defenders Lauren Killey and Bridgett Giles. Killey, a junior from Austin, Texas, is making her third straight appearance on the first team as she has scored two goals and recorded six assists on the season. Giles, a senior from Herndon, Va., is making her third straight all-conference appearance as one of Furman¹s marking backs.

Goalkeeper Melissa Barnes and forward Danielle Petro both earned second team honors. Barnes, a junior from Prospect, Ky., leads the league with a 0.87 goals against average, while Petro, a freshman from Lilburn, Ga., has been impressive with 14 goals and 8 assists on the year. Furman opens the 2000 Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against Appalachian State.
