GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The 23rd ranked Furman women's soccer team improved to 9-0 on the season with a 6-0 win over Appalachian State on Wednesday.
Nancy Mather scored her first career goal 1:37 into the match as she knocked in a loose ball in the mouth of the goal. Kaye Brownlee increased the Lady Paladin lead to 2-0 at the 8:47 mark on a header. Brownlee's goal was set up as Sarah Tollick sent in a cross to the back post which Emily Turgeon crossed back to the center to Brownlee.
Tollick, who assisted on the first two goals, scored one of her own as she drilled a cleared ball over Mountaineer keeper Kristen McNeill.
Furman added three second half goals by freshmen Danielle Petro and Emily Turgeon. Petro scored her team leading 12th goal of the season at the 56:38 mark. She is only one goal away from the Furman single season goal record set last year. Turgeon connected on her ninth and 10th goals of the season on one-one-ones to extend the lead to 6-0.
"It is good to get another confernece win under our belt," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We have a big weekend ahead of us and I think we are ready to show what we are capable of."
Furman improves to 9-0 on the season, 2-0 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State falls to 3-4-1 on the season, 0-1 in the Southern Conference.
Furman is ranked 23rd in the nation in the latest Soccer Buzz poll and 25th by the American Soccer Writers. Furman entered the week with the second most potent offense in the nation. The Lady Paladins have scored 51 goals this season in nine matches and have not trailed all season.
Furman will battle N.C. State Friday at 4:30 in the Clemson University Invitational at Clemson and will take on the No. 2 ranked Clemson Tigers Saturday at 7 p.m.
