GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team defeated Charleston Southern 6-1 Saturday night to win the fourth annual Umbro Kickoff Classic at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
Freshman Danielle Petro knocked in a header off a double assist from Sarah Tollick and Nancy Mather 2:39 into the match. Charleston Southern rallied to tied the score at the 4:07 mark as Christi Arnold scored for the Bucs.
For the second straight night, a Kaye Brownlee penalty kick broke the 1-1 and led to an onslaught of Furman goals. Brownlee was fouled in the box and connected on her third penalty kick goal of the season to put Furman on top 2-1 at the 21:19 mark. Melissa Turner extended the Furman lead to 3-1 as she scored off a Kaye Brownlee, Lauren Killey double assist.
Furman then added three second half goals before settling on the 6-1 victory. Melissa Turner scored her second goal of the night at the 49:00 minute mark after receiving an Emily Turgeon dish after Turgeon sprinted through several Buc defenders.
Defender Lauren Killey scored her second career goal and her second in two nights as she won a loose ball and drilled the ball past the arms of Buc keeper Susan Anderson. Emily Turgeon finished off the night with a goal off a Danielle Petro assist.
"We are playing really well right now," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "A lot of different players are scoring goals and our three forwards are really coming together."
Lauren Killey was named the MVP of the Umbro Kickoff Classic. Nancy Mather, Kaye Brownlee, Melissa Turner, and Emily Turgeon were also selected to the all-tournament team from Furman. Representing Charleston Southern on the all-tournament team was Christi Arnold, Robyn Eads, and Lacie Hack. Also selected to the team was Jill Rahnert, Chandra Yorganson, and Christy Walls from Georgia State and Megan Stack from Tulane.
Furman improves to 6-0 on the season, while Charleston Southern falls to 3-3. Furman is ranked seventh in the Southeast Region and have scored 30 goals in its first six matches, an average of 5.0 goals per match. The Lady Paladins have also not trailed all season.
