GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman junior Melissa Turner scored twice to lead the Lady Paladins to a 6-0 victory over Coastal Carolina Tuesday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. With the win, Furman improves to 4-0 on the season, the best start in school history.
Coastal Carolina, a first year program, battled the Lady Paladins tough in the first half holding Furman to just one first half goal. Turner scored that goal as she connected after receiving a Kathy Gaertner pass at the 33:20 mark.
Furman opened up the flood gates in the second half as the Lady Paladins posted five second half goals. Turner scored her second goal of the night off a Lindsey Facciolo assist at the 61:11 mark to give Furman the 2-0 lead.
Furmanıs leading scorer, freshman Danielle Petro scored her sixth goal of the season as she scored an unassisted goal after beating several Chantsı defenders. Facciolo then added her first goal of the season at the 70:12 mark to push the Furman lead to 4-0. Diana Poore deflected a Sarah Tollick cross at the 75:00 minute mark into the net and Nicole Malseed finished the scoring off with a penalty kick at 80:12.
"I was happy with our intensity in the second half," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Coastal Carolina is a very good first year program, probably one of the best first-year programs in the country this year."
Furman outshot Coastal Carolina 28-3 on the match and attempted 17 corner kicks to Coastal Carolinaıs two.
The Lady Paladins host the fourth annual Umbro Kickoff Classic this weekend with matches against Tulane (Friday 7:30 p.m.) and Charleston Southern (Saturday 9:30 p.m.).
Coastal Carolina falls to 0-3-1, while Furman is 4-0 for the first time in the seven-year history of the program. The Lady Paladins are ranked seventh in the Southeast Region and receiving votes in the American Sports Writers national poll.
