GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team opens its 2000 season Saturday at 2 p.m. against East Tennessee State at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium.
The Lady Paladins begin the 2000 campaign with high expectations after a record setting season in 1999. Furman is the preseason favorite to repeat as Southern Conference Champions, is ranked eighth in the Southeast Region, and is receiving votes in the American Sports Writers preseason poll.
"I am excited to start the season," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We have had three solid weeks of practice and now we are ready to play for real. I am excited about what this team can accomplish this season."
Furman returns nine starters and all seven all-conference picks from last year. Among Furman's returnees are first team All American Kaye Brownlee and all-south picks Melissa Turner and Lauren Killey. The Lady Paladins also welcome a strong freshman class that features Emily Turgeon and Danielle Petro.
The match marks the first event of the 2000-2001 athletic season at Furman University. Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $1 for children. Saturday is Upstate Girls Soccer Association (UGSA) Day and poster day at Furman. All children in attendance will receive a free poster.
