With the match even at 2-2 late in the second half the Lady Paladins freshman combo of Emily Turgeon and Danielle Petro each scored a goal and assisted the other to push Furman to the victory.
Melissa Turner opened the scoring for Furman with a goal at the 16:10 mark off a rebound from Lauren Killey. Furman continued its strong attack as freshman Danielle Petro knocked the ball into the net after a flurry of activity in front of the goal. Melissa Turner and Emily Turgeon set up the goal among a number of Furman and Georgetown players in the mouth of the goal.
Georgetown rallied late in the second half as Karin Ostrander and Alyson Smith scored goals at the 71:12 mark and the 77:49 mark of the second half to pull the Hoyas to a 2-2 tie.
Furman's Emily Turgeon then took a Danielle Petro pass and slid a ball past Hoyas' keeper Emily Mann from 25 yards out to give Furman the 3-2 lead at the 81:07 mark. Turgeon then returned the favor to her roommate 32 seconds later as she assisted Petro on Furman's fourth goal of the afternoon.
Georgetown continued the flurry of goals 22 seconds after Petro's as Ostrander scored her second goal of the afternoon at the 82:01 mark. The Lady Paladin defense held strong after that to preserve the 4-3 victory.
"I thought we played well today against a quality opponent in a tough conference," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We are going to have to maximize our intensity, especially on defense, for a full 90 minutes if we want to reach our goals."
Furman improves to 2-0 on the season, while Georgetown falls to 1-2. The Lady Paldins, ranked eighth in the Southeast Region, travel to face SEC foe Vanderbilt on Friday night in Nashville, Tenn.
