GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman women's soccer forwards Emily Turgeon and Melissa Turner are currently first and second in the nation in points in NCAA Division I Statistics released on Tuesday.
Freshman Emily Turgeon, from Raleigh, N.C., is leading the nation with 37 points on the season, while Turner, a junior from Marietta, Ga., is second with 36 points. Turgeon has scored 12 goals and recorded 13 assists this season in 13 matches. She places 12th in the nation in goals and third in assists. She has started all 13 matches and has recorded a goal or an assist in 11 of the Lady Paladins' 13 matches this season.
Turner leads the Paladins with 15 goals on the year and has recorded six assists. She has already broken the Furman single season goal record, a mark she and Kaye Brownlee set last year with 13 goals. Turner is also second in the nation in goals. She has two hat tricks on the year. Turgeon and Turner are not the only two players scoring goals this year as freshman Danielle Petro has 12 goals and the Lady Paladins are tied with North Carolina with 60 goals on the season to lead the nation.
"It's not often that you have two players leading the nation in any category, much less total points," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Melissa has improved steadily each year she has been here and I now feel she is one of the best forwards in the nation. Her stats are even more remarkable when you consider she has only been playing forward for about a year now as she spent the first year and a half as a defensive midfielder."
"Emily has made a huge impact up top for us this year, as has Danielle Petro. We have two freshmen with 12 goals who have really changed to complexion of our attack."
Furman is ranked 18th in the nation in the latest American Soccer Writers (ASW) poll and are 12-1 on the season, 4-0 in the Southern Conference. The Lady Paladins host College of Charleston on Friday at 7 p.m. and Georgia Southern on Sunday at 1 p.m.
