GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman freshmen Emily Turgeon and Danielle Petro each received Soccer Buzz national honors on Thursday. Turgeon was chosen a first team freshman All American and an honorable mention All American. Petro was picked as an honorable mention freshman All American.
Turgeon, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., finished the nation as the leading scorer in Division I as she recorded 63 points on 23 goals and 17 assists. She is honored as one of the nation's top 13 freshman with the freshman All America award. She becomes the second Lady Paladin to earn first team freshman All America as Kaye Brownlee earned the same award in 1998. Turgeon's honorable mention All America citation is the second All America award of the year for Turgeon as she was a third team College Soccer Online pick.
Earlier this year, Turgeon became the first player in Southern Conference women's soccer history to be named SoCon freshman-of-the-year and player-of-the-year in the same season. Turgeon was a finalists for the Soccer Buzz national freshman-of-the-year award, an award that went to Stanford's Marcie Ward.
Danielle Petro, a freshman from Lilburn, Ga., adds Soccer Buzz honorable mention freshman All America honors to Soccer Buzz all-freshman regional honors received earler in the week. She scored 15 goals and recorded eight assists on the year as one of Furman's three starting forwards. Petro was a second team all-conference pick and notched a hat trick in her first ever collegiate match. The Furman trio of Turgeon, Petro, and junior Melissa Turner combined for 56 goals and 38 assists on the year.
Furman concluded the season with its second straight 20-3 overall record and 9-0 league mark. The Lady Paladins advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Duke.
