GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman was one of 33 Division I schools to earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Women's College Team Academic Award this week.
The award is presented by the NSCAA to all teams with over a 3.00 team Grade Point Average (GPA) for the 2000 calendar year. This is the first year Furman has received the award. The Lady Paladins combined for a 3.09 team GPA.
Furman joins Davidson as the only Southern Conference schools to earn the academic award. Only four South Region schools received the award as East Carolina and UNC Wilmington joined Furman and Davidson.
"This is one of the most important awards this team can win," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "It proves that our student-athletes are excelling both on the field and in the classroom."
Furman concluded the season with its second straight 20-3 overall record and 9-0 league mark. The Lady Paladins advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Duke. Furman also achieved a national ranking of 13th during the season in the American Soccer Writers and Soccer Buzz polls.
