GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman women's soccer team used three second half goals in a ten minute time span to defeat Tulane 4-1 Friday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium in the Umbro Kickoff Classic.
Lady Paladin freshman Emily Turgeon put Furman on the board in the first half with a goal at the 12:55 mark. She was assisted by Kaye Brownlee on the play. Tulane rallied to tie the score right before halftime as Megan Stack connected off a double assist from Mandy Schumacher and Alycia Wanat.
The match remained even at 1-1 until the 67:23 mark when Kaye Brownlee connected on a penalty kick after Melissa Turner was fouled hard in the box. Brownleeıs penalty kick goal started a ten minute flurry in which Furman extended its lead to 4-1.
Sarah Tollickıs header off a cross from Melissa Turner put the Lady Paladins ahead 3-1 and All-Southeast defender Lauren Killey scored her first career goal as she drilled a ball that had been cleared from a corner kick into the net to make it 4-1.
"I thought we played great today," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Tulane is a good, possession oriented team and we had to play really well to come away with a 4-1 victory."
The win improves Furmanıs record to 5-0, the best start in the programıs seven year history. Through five matches, the Lady Paladins have not trailed in a match this season.
In earlier action in the Umbro Kickoff Classic, Charleston Southern defeated Georgia State 2-1 with a late second half goal. Furman battles Charleston Southern in the championship of the Classic Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. Tulane will face Georgia State at 7 p.m.
Tulane falls to 3-2 on the season.
