Greensboro, NC -- The 14th ranked Furman women's soccer team defeated UNCG 1-0 Monday night to claim its second straight Southern Conference regular season title.
The Lady Paladins improve to 8-0 in league play and 16-1 overall. Furman has one conference match remaining at Wofford on Thursday, but has a two game lead over three teams tied for second place. Furman won its 20th straight SoCon match, a streak that dates back to the start of the 1999 season.
Furman's goal came midway through the first half as freshman Danielle Petro knocked in a five yard shot in front of the goal after receiving a cross from Melissa Turner. The play was built up as Katie Carson fed Turner down the left sideline, who beat her defender before crossing for the goal.
"I thought this was a good match," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "UNCG played tough, but we did what we had to do to win the match and win the conference. I am very proud of our girls."
Furman has two regular season contests remaining before the Southern Conference Tournament November 2-5.
The Lady Paladins are ranked 14th in the nation in the Soccer Buzz national poll and 16th in the American Soccer Writers (ASW) national poll. Furman is fourth in the Soccer Buzz Southeast Region rankings.
