TURGEON LEADS FURMAN TO 6-1 WIN OVER WOFFORD

SPARTANBURG, SC -- Furman freshmen Emily Turgeon scored three goals and assisted on two to lead Furman to an impressive 6-1 victory over Wofford on Thursday night to finish the Southern Conference regular season with a perfect 9-0 league mark.

Turgeon, the nationıs leading scorer now has 19 goals and 17 assists on the season in 18 contests.

Turgeonıs first goal came at the 7:05 mark as she finished a Sarah Tollick cross from the left side of the box. Just 1:33 later, Turgeon fed Melissa Turner on a breakaway to extend the lead to 2-0.

Turgeon added two more first half goals to give her the hat-trick before halftime. After taking a pass from Kaye Brownlee, she juked the charging Terrier keeper and shot into an empty net at the 30:41 mark. Her final goal of the day came at the 42:29 mark of the second half as she finished a Melissa Turner cross.

The Lady Paladins extended their commanding halftime advantage when freshman Danielle Petro nailed her 14th goal of the season off a cross from Turgeon at the 65:10 mark. Furman added its sixth goal of the night when Michelle Muro knocked in a Kathy Gaertner corner kick that had been flicked by Natalie Muro.

Wofford would add a late goal with 6:24 to play as Sarah Penn finished a Heide Best pass.

"After several close conference wins, I am excited to see us win a game like this," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Itıs not easy to go undefeated in this conference and we have done it two years in a row now. That is a testament to our ability to come out and focus every night. This conference is the best it has ever been and we need to remain focused in the conference tournament in order to claim our second straight tournament title."

With her assist on Furman's first goal, senior Sarah Tollick moved into second place on Furman's career assist chart with 32 assists, while junior Melissa Turner moved into second place on Furman's career points chart with a goal and an assist on the evening.

Furman has one regular season match remaining against in-state rival South Carolina in Wednesday. The Southern Conferences Tournament starts Thursday, November 2 in Charleston, S.C., with Furman as the No. 1 seed. The Lady Paladins will play the eighth place team at 11:30 a.m. Furman improves to 17-1 on the season, 9-0 in the Southern Conference.The Lady Paladins are ranked 14th in the nation by Soccer Buzz and 16th by the American Soccer Writers.
