FirstClass Container Limits

Aside from your FirstClass quota, your account also has a container limit. The container limit is a hard number set by the software developers and is unchangeable. No FirstClass container can have more than 4096 flaggable items.

Along with the flaggable item limit, there is also a limit of total items allowed in a container. No container can have more than 32,000 flaggable and unflaggable items.

When your container reaches its limit of 4096 flaggable items, it will no longer be able to accept new items. Because of this, it is very important that you file your e-mail in folders rather than leaving it in the mailbox. If your mailbox reaches 4096 flaggable items, you will not be able to receive incoming mail.

Computing and Information Services has several suggestions of things you can do to keep your container limit from being reached. Please note that while it could take you an hour or more to arrange your mailbox using the instructions, it's worth the time spent!
