New Computer Installation Information

Congratulations, you have a new computer coming. This purpose of this web page is to answer frequently asked questions relating to computer installations.

  1. What about the data I have on my computer?

C&IS will take care of backing up your data and restoring it to your new computer. Only user data from the Documents and Settings directory on a Windows computer or the Users directory on a Macintosh computer will be backed up. This includes My Documents and the Desktop. The backup will occur as soon as your new computer is installed. Due to the extreme care used in backing up your data safely there will be at least a 24 hour, but not more than, 48 hour turn around time to complete this process.

  2. What about my Internet Explorer Favorites?

It is easy to forget about your favorites or bookmarks.

To export your Favorites, follow these steps:

    • Start Internet Explorer
    • On the File menu, click Import and Export, and then click Next.
    • Click Export Favorites and then click Next.
    • Click Favorites and then click Next.
    • Type the name of the file that you want to export the favorites to. By default, the export file is named Bookmark.htm.
    • Click Browse and select a location to copy the file to.
    • Click Next and then click Finish.
*Please note the location that you saved BOOKMARK.HTM. This process is similar for other browsers.*

  3. Will I be able to print?

Once you login to your new computer you will find a folder on your desktop that has shortcuts to your department's networked printers. Simply double-click the shortcuts to install the networked printers. This will open the print queue for the network printer. Once the queue opens click the Printer Menu and make sure "Connect" is grayed out. If it is not grayed out, click Connect.

Note: Mac users will already have their printers installed.

Additional printers will be installed upon request.

  4. Does the new computer have a floppy drive?

New computers do not come with floppy drives. If you require a floppy drive, please contact Shirley Haines in C&IS.

  5. What software is on the new computer?

You will have all of the latest versions of software that Furman is licensed for already installed on your new machine. If you have purchased additional software licenses please let us know ahead of time and we will do our best to have the software already installed on your machine before we come out for the install. Basic Furman software for Windows includes, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office Suite, FSecure Anti-Virus, First Class, Datatel, WSFTP. On Macs you will get Microsoft Office Suite, Sophos Anti-Virus and First Class.

For more software information look here: Standard Furman Software

  6. What happens to the old computer?

After completing a full backup, the old machine is held for one week before we fully erase the hard drive. The machine will then be redeployed to another user so that Furman can get as much useful life from the machine as possible. If the machine is too old we will dispose of it.

  7. How long will the installation take?

The time needed to install your computer will be around 30 minutes. An appointment will be made with you for the installation. Don't forget to remove CD's or floppy disks from the computer before we arrive.

  8. Do I need to be here when the computer is installed?

It is required that you be present when your new computer is installed.

  9. What kind of connections do I need in my office?

An active, wired network connection with a good quality network cable and power connections are required to operate the computer. If we are installing a computer in a new location that does not currently have a computer installed you will want to check for these connections.

It is our goal to make sure that you are completely satisfied with your new computer. A form will be brought along with your new computer for you to sign and send to C&IS once your data is restored.

Please call or email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Derek Stanley
