Rebecca Gieseking

My work is about harmonious dualities, seeming opposites that come together to make a unified whole.  The sharp, precise creases of the paper contrast with the gentle folds of the fabric, the strict geometric outlines of the crane contrast with the flowing organic lines of the pattern, the simple abstract form of the origami contrasts with the detailed realism of the painting.  But just as important as the contrast between these opposing elements is the unity they create.  The rhythm created by relationships in shape, color, and pattern draws the two parts together into a harmonious whole.

The dualities in my paintings are a reflection of my dual interests in art and chemistry.  The two may sound like polar opposites, but each one has influenced and complemented the other.

The paper crane is a familiar object with rich symbolism.  Each of my paintings explores the form and symbolism of the crane in a different way.  Some cranes jump out from the fabric background, and some nearly blend into the fabric behind them.  Some cranes soar across the canvas, and some sit calmly in place.  These formal differences claim individuality and personality for my constructed species.
