I am drawn to painting for its ability to transform three-dimensional information onto a two-dimensional surface.  My work is less about the subject pictured and more about the strengths and limitations of working two-dimensionally.  For this reason, I choose to paint subjects that are familiar to me: a coffee mug and an apple.  These objects allow me to explore depth and space without becoming bogged down in representation.

This thinking led me to look closer.  I chose to work in encaustics because it is a medium that adds texture and transparency to the painting, providing a more dynamic surface.  I wanted to explore abstractions while still retaining a distinct sense of depth.  The paintings in this series are all based in some way on my initial subjects (a coffee mug or an apple), but they are completely abstracted.  I want my paintings to be ambiguous; the subject is not relevant.  A painting that began as a representational still life has become a study of color, depth, transparency, and texture.
