Scholarships for Prospective Students
Scholarships for Incoming Art Majors

The Furman University Art Department has a small number of scholarships for incoming freshmen. These awards usually range from $400.00 to $800.00 for the first academic year only and are divided among the three terms of enrollment. Scholarships are not automatically renewed. Of course, in succeeding years students may apply for additional scholarship funds ranging from $200.00 to $1,700.00 per year. Application reviews are usually held in early spring of each year.

To be eligible for scholarship awards, incoming students must submit either a sleeve of 5 to 20 slides or a group of 5 to 20 high quality photographs of artworks to the Art Department Chair with a cover letter of application for scholarship consideration, a statement of intention to major in art, and a completed scholarship application form. The slides or photographs should include a sampling of work created within the last two to three years and should if possible include two to four drawings from life as well as any other media in which the student has worked. Works which are copied from other artworks or photographs should not be included in your scholarship application, unless they have been creatively altered, as they do not show your originality or ability to observe. Applicants may be evaluated by all of the department faculty when needed. All applicants are evaluated on the basis of originality, compositional skills, craftsmanship in presentation, potential, ambition, openness to new ideas, and need. The Financial Aid Committee (or Financial Aid Officer) must approve selections.

Scholarship applications should be submitted to the department chair by November 15 (early decision) or January 15 (regular decision). Applications received after January 15 will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are depleted. Scholarship awards will be made by April 1 and are contingent upon admissions acceptance to Furman. Scholarship monies may be used only for study at Furman or through Furman sponsored study programs.

Upon offer of scholarship, the following conditions apply:

a)

that you register for drawing and design during the fall and spring terms and 3D design during the winter term of your freshman year (in case of conflicts, consult the department chair);

b) that you maintain your intended major within the department during the term(s) in which art scholarship funds are received;
c) that you maintain at least a B average in all art courses;
d) that if you decide to change your major from art to another area, you will notify the Art Department Chair in writing. The unused portion of the scholarship will be forfeited.
e) that if you change your major from art and have not notified the department, or you have taken only art courses which apply toward the General Education Requirements, you may be asked to return scholarship monies received during the term in question.

These conditions are compulsory to comply with the donor's stipulated criteria for scholarship awards, "to students majoring in or planning to major in art." Of course, as an art major you would be eligible for further art scholarships in coming years.

The following scholarships are available:

Boyles Scholarship:
Targeted to freshmen although sophomores, juniors and seniors also are considered. Incoming freshmen are eligible for this scholarship; they may apply by submitting portfolios to the Department Chair by November 15 (Early Decision) and January 15 (Regular Decision). The Financial Aid Committee (or Financial Aid officer) must approve selections.

Keith Scholarship:
Available for freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Awards may be made to one or more students.

Blackwood Scholarship:
Generally awarded to upper level students demonstrating financial need, high moral character and strong creative potential in the visual arts.

Hines Art Scholarship:
Awarded to students demonstrating financial need, high moral character and academic and artistic promise.

Cunningham Scholarship:
Rotating scholarship available to art students only once every fourth year. May be awarded to either one or two outstanding students.

Leslie Scholarship:
Rotating scholarship available only to juniors and seniors majoring in business, economics or liberal arts. Preference will be given to students who plan to pursue a career in advertising, public relations, communications or graphic arts.

Scholarships are awarded contingent upon the student’s continued performance, diligence in his or her work, and dedication to achieving excellence. Students who receive scholarships are role models for their peers, and their work in the department reflects on the department as well as on themselves.

These criteria should be maintained for the student to continue receiving the scholarship. Should the student change his or her major to another department, the art department chair must be notified. Any unused portion of the scholarship will be forfeited. If the student changes the major from art and has not notified the department, or if the student has taken only art courses which apply toward the General Education Requirements, the department may ask that scholarship monies be returned. In addition, all policies, rules and regulations that direct student life at Furman, as stated by THE HELMSMAN, apply to scholarship recipients. If students do not maintain the standards, the scholarship may be revoked or reduced by a majority decision of the art department faculty.
