Sarah Tice Artists like Michelangelo, Bouguereau, and Sargent fascinate me. Their paintings make me want to live in the time that they were created. Since I can’t deny that I am a child of the 21st century, I strive to create paintings that look as though they were done centuries ago, but with a modern twist. I prefer realism because I have always been fascinated with classic art, representation, and beauty. While photography duplicates a scene, a painting allows the artist to present the scene better than in real life. A painter can add beautiful light and change colors to display the scene in a more appealing way. In my paintings, I want to create juxtaposition between modern and old. I have chosen to do this is through a series of five still lives that depict sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste, the five senses. Each painting incorporates classic objects that represent each sense; into this traditional still life setup, I then insert a modern object. Because the still lives contain classic objects such as fruit, flowers, etc., I think the modern objects will create a strong contrast. The modern object does not immediately stick out to the viewer, but creates a kind of unease. The goal of my show is to produce a new kind of still life that represents the time that I live in but still incorporates all the classic objects of still lives in the past. |
