A Few of Our Graduates Are...
- A Sampler of What Furman's Biology Graduates
Are Doing Now
Our former students have gone into a wide variety of career fields, both
science-related and otherwise. The people described below were chosen just
to demonstrate this range of possibilities. Individual circumstances
may have changed since this was last updated, but you can still see the breadth
of career fields that our graduates pursue.
- Dr. Peter Stangel ('81) lives in Atlanta,
where he is Director of the Southeastern region of the National
Fish and Wildlife Foundation. He earned the Ph.D. degree from Clemson
University.
- Nelson Roberts ('87) works in Columbia,
SC, with the Department of Health and Environmental Control, where he is
a Laboratory Certification Officer.
- Brian Black ('88) is doing research
and teaching at the University of California-San Francisco. Brian's
principal research interest is gene-level control of muscle differentiation.
His Ph.D. was from Wake Forest University.
- Dr. Gary Lindquester ('81), a molecular
geneticist, is an associate
professor of biology at Rhodes College, in Tennessee.
- Dr. Roy Crabtree ('76)
is administrator for the Southeast Region of the National
Marine Fisheries Service (a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmosphere
Administration, NOAA). He earned the Ph.D. degree from the College of William
and Mary.
- Dr. George Shiflet ('69) is chair
of the Biology Department at Wofford College, in Spartanburg, SC.
- Steve O'Dell ('75) is Director of Clinical
and and Preclinical Development for Aderis Pharmaceuticals, a pharmaceutical
development and testing company in Richmond, Virginia.
- Jeana Samples Yates ('94) is Product Manager
for Cole-Parmer, a major distributor
of scientific supplies. She earned a Master's degree in biotechnology from
Northwestern University.
- Dr. Lori Siemens ('88) earned the DVM
degree at The University of California at Davis and then went on to do post-doctoral
research in veterinary medicine at Michigan State University. She
is now in a private practice in California, with a specialty in cardiology.
- Dr. Gene Rhodes ('83) is a professor of
Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue
University, where his research focuses on conservation genetics.
- Peter Dudley ('93) served with the
Peace Corps in Africa, where he used his biological skills to help people
live a healthier life by educating them on malaria prevention and training
others to spread the word on this and other health matters. Click here

- Drs. John and Frances Lamar Story ('74)
are practicing family physicians in Lancaster, SC.
- Dr. Fred Pollard ('65) graduated in dentistry
from the Medical University of South Carolina and practices in Travelers
Rest, SC, just down the road from Furman's campus.
- Dr. Roger Stevenson ('62) is founder and
director of the Greenwood (SC) Genetic Center.
- Dr. Frances Smith Ligler ('73) is a biochemist
and project director at the Naval
Research Laboratory near Washington, DC., and a trustee of Furman University.
- Greg Lewis ('91) finished the Ph.D.
program (ecology/evolution) at Cornell University. He is now a member of
the Furman Biology faculty.
- Candice Burgiss Lewis ('91, wife of Greg)
was a Research Technician in Cornell University's Department of Plant Breeding
before returning to South Carolina, where she now works in a medical office.
- Dr. Jeff Dreyer ('77) is associate professor
of pediatrics at The Baylor College of Medicine, working in cardiology and
basic research.
- Dr. Chris Lassiter ('98) finished the
Ph. D. degree in the Program in Genetics at Duke
University in 2005, did a post-doctoral research there, and is now a
faculty member of Roanoke College.
- Mike (Bureau) MacLeod ('89) and his wife
Barbara Warlick MacLeod ('89) published River
Magazine and he is now a naturalist and professional photographer based
in Montana.
- Dr. Tom Gower
('80) is Professor of Forest
Ecology and Management at the University Wisconsin at Madison.
- Dr. Ed Jhee ('98) finished the Ph.D. degree
in botany at Auburn University and is employed by the environmental consulting
company Tetra Tech, Inc. in northern Virginia. Among his projects is design
of a solid waste management program for Andrews Air Force Base.
- Elaine Arrington Gay ('97) was awarded
the Ph.D. degree in neurobiology at the 2003 commencement at the University
of North Carolina Chapel Hill
- Dr. Kristen Page ('90) earned the Ph.D.
degree from Purdue and is an assistant
professor of biology at Wheaton College in Illinois.
- Dr. Davis McGuirt ('86) is an assistant
professor of biology at Houghton College.
