Debate Society:

The department also sponsors the Furman Debating Society, which promotes student discussion of important national and international issues through public forums, student congresses and intercollegiate debating competitions. The debating society has engaged in debates with the British and Japanese national debate teams, and Furman debating students have received national recognition for their forensic skills. Debate team members have participated in competitions at such schools as the University of Chicago, Princeton, Johns Hopkins and the University of Virginia

The Paladin Newspaper

The Paladin Newpaper has been the official newpaper of Furman University since 1916. Published weekly during the academic year, the newspaper's award winning content is created and edited by Furman students and distributed to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and subscribers. Any student may apply to write, photograph, or design graphics. If you are interested in finding out more about the Paladin newspaper, please contact Kaleb McMichen, Editor in Chief at paladin@furman.edu or Campus extension 2077.

Association of Students In Communication

The goal of the association is to bridge students' academic interests with the professional goals in the area of communication: broadcast and print journalism, public relations, advertising, and advocacy. The organization holds bi-monthly meetings in which lectures are given by local professionals on topics related to professions in communication. The organization also creates marketing campaigns for campus events such as the Vagina Monologues. The Association of Students in Communication holds workshops on a variety of professional activities relating to communications such as creating professional portfolios, networking, and writing news releases. Lambda Pi Eta


The Nu Theta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta was chartered at Furman University on June 26, 2001. Lambda Pi Eta is the official honorary society of the National Communication Association and recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the discipline of communication. Members must meet the organization’s strict criteria for admission and, once inducted, participate in LPE’s philanthropic and academic activities

Cicero Society


The Cicero Society is the organization of Communication Studies majors at Furman University. Organized in 2003, the Cicero Society provides a university voice for Communication Studies majors. The society hosts a number of campus events, including speakers, workshops, and debates. Its motto is the Ciceronian ideal, “Sapientia et Eloquentia”.
