Course Description and
Purpose:
This
course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the role
of exercise in health, disease prevention, and rehabilitation. The course objectives are to provide students
with the following:
(1)
a fundamental understanding of the physiological responses to acute exercise
and physiological adaptations to regular physical activity; (2) an
understanding of the therapeutic potential of regular physical activity for
persons with chronic diseases; (3) the rationale to generate an appropriate
exercise prescription; and (4) an opportunity to develop effective clinical
assessment skills that are currently used in a variety of health-related
professions including clinical exercise physiology, medicine, allied health
fields (i.e., physical therapy), and health/wellness education programs.

HES Exam Policy:
1. All exams are cumulative and should be taken on the day that they
are specified on the syllabus. Exams
will be given on the assigned days unless extenuating circumstances (i.e.,
inclement weather) force the instructor to move the date.
2. If you are unable to take an exam at the scheduled time, you will
be required to take a make-up exam comprised of different questions from the
exam given on class day. If you are
aware that you will miss a exam because of an excused,
planned event such as athletics or a school/personal trip, you will be required
to make-up the exam within two days after your return to campus. The instructor will arrange a suitable time
period for those students recovering from illness. The final exam must be taken during the specified time
slot. Any exceptions must be approved by
the instructor and the HES Department Chair.
Attendance Policy:
1. Attendance is essential for you to derive
the maximum benefit from HES 50. The
only acceptable
reasons for missing class include:
(1) Personal illness severe enough to prevent class attendance (infirmary note
required); (2) Death in your family (administrative note required); and (3)
Your status as an official representative of
Lab Assignments:
1. Lab assignments are to be completed by the due date and turned in
at the beginning of class.
2. Late lab assignments (after the beginning of the class period)
will be deducted 10 points per day.
Academic Integrity: Your enrollment in this course signifies that
you accept the rules of academic honesty described in The Helmsman. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and
will result in immediate dismissal from the course. Students who would attempt to cheat during
their academic life would undoubtedly attempt to cheat in their professional
life. Further, students found guilty of
academic dishonesty will be caned.
Disabilities Accommodations: Students with disabilities who need academic accommodations
should contact Dr. Sarah Fletcher, Coordinator of Disability Services (2998),
in Plyler Hall 1 (basement).
Don't
procrastinate: do this early in the term.
“Participation”: In the spirit of “Engaged Learning” students are expected
to be proactive in contributing to class discussions, presentations, and
laboratory activities. Special topic presentations will be
assigned and incorporated throughout the term.
The special topic presentation will be developed by student teams under
the guidance of the instructor and will count 10% of the final grade. In addition, a portion of the final grade (10%)
will be derived from your participation and enthusiasm (assessed at the
discretion of the instructor) during laboratory
activities. The schedule of
laboratory activities is as follows:
