The Pluralism
Project has its roots at Harvard University. Professor Diana
Eck began the program in 1991. Dr. Eck's goal was to research religious
diversity in the United States, focusing especially on immigrant populations.
The project has since published an educational CD-ROM
entitled "On Common Ground" that
contains information on the various religious groups represented in the
U.S.
Furman University became a part of the project in 1998. Furman's
goal is both to map the religious landscape of South Carolina and to form
long standing relationships with the various religious communities in the
state. By doing so, Furman hopes to encourage the growth of interfaith
dialogue in South Carolina.
