COURSE DESCRIPTION.    French 11 is the first half of an elementary grammar course sequence which integrates elements of language and culture. The curriculum in this course will provide the opportunity for individual growth in the five areas of language proficiency: speaking, listening, writing, reading, and cultural awareness. The course is specifically designed to encourage the development of communication skills through frequent student interaction.

CLASS ATTENDANCE.  Class attendance is extremely important in a course of this nature. The only excused absences are those for serious illness, participation in a university-approved activity, or family emergencies. Each unexcused absence over two will cause your final grade to drop by one point. Only those absences documented by the infirmary, your personal physician or the Dean's office will be excused. Undocumented absences are unexcused. Students are fully responsible for work covered during their absence from class.

LATE WORK/MAKE-UP WORK. All work is due at the beginning of the class hour for which it is assigned. No work will be accepted late. As a general rule, make-up work will be accepted only in the case of an excused absence. No make-up quizzes will be administered regardless of the reason for the absence.

HOMEWORK. Written exercises from the textbook or Cahier d'activités will be assigned regularly on the daily course guide. Exercises should be completed for the day assigned, but will be handed in to the instructor only on exam days, when a credit/no credit grade will be assigned for the two chapters on which each exam is based. No late homework will be accepted.

  • écrits: assigned exercises in the Cahier d'activités are to be completed and (carefully) corrected, in a different color of ink, using the answer key in the back of the workbook
  • à l'écoute: these exercises in the "lab manual" section of the Cahier d'activités are to be completed using the online listening program. Due to copyright issues, you must use an on-campus networked computer to access the lab program. Correct them in a different color of ink, using the answer key in the back of the workbook
  • exercices de grammaire (web): This optional activity links to additional grammar explanations and self-correcting practice exercises on the Tex's French Grammar web site

COMPOSITIONS.  Students will write 2 compositions this term. The first composition is to be typed, double spaced. The professor will indicate all corrections to be made to the first version; students will make these corrections and then turn in both the original and the revised version of the compositions. The final grade on the compositions will be a composite of the two versions. The second composition will be written in class; the grade will based on the original version only.

It is expected that, as with all assignments, compositions will be the product of each student's own work and learning. It is a violation of the university statement on academic integrity to have others proofread your compositions before submitting them for a grade. In general, you should adhere to the guidelines of section E.2, p. 6 of the handbook "Plagiarism and Academic Integrity at Furman University, " which reads as follows: "Assistance in spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. The actual composition of the paper must be the student's own work, down to the most minute detail of the writing. If you should need assistance, then you should refer to a dictionary or composition handbook or should consult your teacher, but you should not seek the help of another student. Help obtained from anyone other than the teacher must be specifically acknowledged."

ORAL PERFORMANCE. Your use of French in the classroom is an important aspect of the course and counts as a significant percentage of your final grade. You are encouraged as much as possible to use French when talking to the professor and to other students in the class. Oral performance will be evaluated throughout the semester in class and through dialogues which you will regularly create and perform in collaboration with other students. An oral exam will be administered at the end of the course.
