| COURSE
DESCRIPTION.
French 12 is the second half of an elementary grammar course
which integrates elements of language and culture. The curriculum
in this course will provide the opportunity for individual
growth in the five areas of language proficiency: speaking,
listening, writing, reading, and cultural awareness. The course
is specifically designed to encourage the development of communication
skills through frequent student interaction.
CLASS
ATTENDANCE. Class attendance is extremely important
in a course of this nature. The only excused absences are
those for serious illness, participation in a university-approved
activity, or family emergencies. Each unexcused absence over
two will cause your final grade to drop by one point. Only
those absences documented by the infirmary, your personal
physician or the Dean's office will be excused. Students are
fully responsible for work covered during their absence from
class.
LATE
WORK/MAKE-UP WORK. All work is due at the
beginning of the class hour for which it is assigned. No work
will be accepted late. As a general rule, make-up work will
be accepted only in the case of an excused absence. No make-up
quizzes will be administered regardless of the reason for
the absence.
HOMEWORK.
The Student Activites Manual written and listening exercises
will be completed through the Quia web-based facility as in
French 11. All work must be completed on time to receive credit.
EXTRA
CREDIT FILM CRITIQUES: Up to 10 extra credit points
may be added to your point total for each film critique you
submit. The films in question are those shown in the French
House each Thursday evening during the term. You must attend
the Thursday evening showing of the film, which begins at
7 PM in the Language House, North Village A-302. Your critique
should be around 1 page and may be written in English. Please
include the following elements in your critique:
- Title,
name of director and principal actors, year of film (this
information is available on the Internet
Movie Database)
- Identify
the genre of the film and give a brief plot summary
- Identify
the main theme(s) of the film and discuss how it was presented.
What do you think the director is trying to say through
this film?
- Conclude
by giving your personal opinion of the film; would you recommend
it to others, and if so, to whom?
ePORTFOLIO.
Over the course of this term you will create an electronic
portfolio as a record of your achievements in French 12. This
e-portfolio will contain personal information (in the form
of images and written and spoken text) that relates to the
theme of each chapter. More
detailed information is available on the ePortfolio
page.
It
is expected that, as with all assignments, ePortfolio assignments
will be the product of each student's own work and learning.
It is a violation of the university statement on academic
integrity to have others proofread your work before submitting
it for a grade. In general, you should adhere to the guidelines
of section E.2, p. 6 of the handbook "Plagiarism and Academic
Integrity at Furman University, which reads as follows: "Assistance
in spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. The actual writing
of the paper must be the student's own work, down to the most
minute detail of the writing. If you should need assistance,
then you should refer to a dictionary or composition handbook
or should consult your teacher, but you should not seek the
help of another student. Help obtained from anyone other than
the teacher must be specifically acknowledged."
PARTICIPATION.
Participation in class is an essential component of this course;
the ability to participate depends upon one's attendance and
preparation. Students in French 12 will actively share in
the assessment of their attendance, preparation, and class
participation. Beginning at the end of the second week, students
will assess their participation for the week on the Fiche
de participation (furnished by the instructor).
A
maximum participation score of twenty points may be earned
per class week. One unexcused absence results in a net loss
of two points. However, if a student is absent for an entire
week, she or he receives a zero for that week. Two points
must be deducted from the student's raw score for each day
she/he arrives late to class or leaves early, resulting in
a net deduction of one point from the week's participation
grade. See the participation criteria
for details.
The
student will turn in the Fiche de participation as requested,
normally every Friday. The instructor will review the student's
assessment, providing comments and making any adjustments
deemed necessary. The score will then become the student's
official participation grade for the week.
Students
are to use only French during class, but are encouraged to
ask questions as often as necessary. If you do not feel comfortable
asking your question in French during class, please come by
my office, contact me via e-mail or telephone, or speak to
me before or after class.
