    • Essai. Use the indirect discourse to relate the conversation Jeanne d'Arc held with Charles VII at the Château de Chinon. You play the role of a courtier who was hiding behind a tapestry, spying on Jeanne and the king for the Duc de Bourgogne. Create the text of a note in which you relate to the Duc a part of the conversation you heard. Use expressions such as "Jeanne lui a demandé s'il...", "le roi a répondu que...", "Jeanne lui a dit de..." etc. in order to inform your employer how Jeanne had come to serve the king, how Charles was reacting to this unexpected benefactrice, and what their plans for the future would be, etc. (100-120 words)

    • Questions on the readings. Answer content questions on each of the following texts using complete sentences: Eloge de l'amitié, L'amour au Val-Fourré, Ma grand-mère toute puissante, Mère Awa. A choice of questions will be provided.
    • Composition. Imagine that you are a young beur growing up in Val-Fourré in a traditional Maghrebin family of the kind Faudel describes in his article. Write a note to the Courrier du coeur asking for help with a conflict between you and your parents on an issue of dating or relationships. The conflict as you describe it should reflect the kinds of issues Faudel discussed. It is not necessary to provide an answer to the question. Use expressions from the Champ de vocabulaire for Unité 3 as well as 2 examples of the subjunctive. Prepare this part ahead of time, but you will write it without notes during the test. 70-80 words.

Also be prepared to answer questions on the films La Belle et la Bête (Cocteau version) and Kirikou et la sorcière. A choice of questions will be provided.

    • Traduction. Translate English sentences into French. Review avant de, après + infinitif passé, devoir, en + participe présent. See exercise B, pp. 30-31.
    • Questions sur les textes. Answer content questions on each of the following texts using complete sentences: Les Chroniques de l'ingénieur Norton, La Cathédrale, Une lettre de Van Gogh, pour faire le portrait d'un oiseau, Calligrammes, Le Portrait. A choice of questions will be provided.
    • Composition. Write a short note from Hélène, the protagonist of Le Portrait, to her mother, in which she relates the strange events which have happened to her and her explanation of them. Respect the details of the story as provided by the author, but feel free to use your imagination to fill in the gaps. Use the past tenses (passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait). 50-60 words.
    Be sure to review smaller grammar points such as depuis, ça fait ... que, venir de, rendre, etc.
