Music 08: Woodwind Ensembles

Clarinet Quartets
Clarinet quartets meets once per week at 3:00 to 3:50 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and 4:00 PM on Mondays and Thursdays. Most meetings will be held in D-116 (my studio) or in the
Small Ensemble Room (located in the basement of McAlister Auditorium). A
performance during the Furman Band Prisms Concert in March, and a
chamber concert in May (Spring Term are often on the schedule.
Other Woodwind Ensembles
A variety of woodwind ensembles, viz., octets, quintets, quartets, trios, etc., meet
according to the interest and availability of the students. Some of the
repertory for past years have included Gounod Petite Symphony, Uhl Divertimento
(4 clarinets), Mozart Divertimento (2 cl, bn) Mendelssohn Konzertstücke No. 1,
Schickele Monochrome III, and Jacob Concertino.
Attendance
This course is offered for non-credit. Although attendance
is not required, students are expected to attend most rehearsals in order to maintain
membership in the group. Students are expected to call the director when they cannot
attend rehearsal. In these situations, it may be necessary to see that the students
stand partner has the music folder. Please call 294-2117 if you must miss rehearsal.
Grading Policy
If you attend regularly and participate in performances, you will receive an
S on your transcript. A "U" indicates unsatisfactory participation.
This grade is non-credit and will not count in your GPA.
Goals
To provide through rehearsals and teaching a venue for learning musical styles of melodic parts, inner parts, and bass lines. To provide the student with chamber music experience. One person per part provides the opportunity for the student to learn responsibility in playing a part that no one else has, learning to blend their part with that of others, and learning how to achieve a more critical approach to improving intonation.
