NUMBER OF LESSONS: Fall and Spring = 11; Winter = 7. There are no lessons during exam periods (except makeups). All students should be prepared to take a jury at the end of each term. A jury consists of performing a prepared piece, studies, scales and exercises, and other material to indicate or represent the work, progress, and playing level. An accompanist may be used. Students must submit their class (and work) schedule to the instructor. After receiving cards from all students, the instructor will arrange for lessons and post a schedule on his door. Lessons usually begin the 2nd day of classes.
PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS: It is expected that
ANY student taking applied music will practice a sufficient amount to progress
satisfactorily on his/her instrument. The expectations vary dependent upon the
number of credits taken and the length of the lesson. Each student is expected be
familiar with my studio Practice Techniques
and to prepare scales and other standard exersizes as listed on the Technique
Test. In addition, studies and literature are expected concomitant with
the student's level of performance.
2 Credits(Music90-B) - A 60 minute lesson each week. This
indicates a serious commitment to your instrument and is the standard course for Freshman
music majors. The student is expected to practice 2 hours per day (5 & ½ per week),
or a total of 11 hours per week. Each student should develop a daily routine for warm-up,
and a practice plan for developing high levels of technique (tongue and finger) via normal
exercises, viz., scales and other standard patterns found in the Technique Test.
1 Credit(Music90-A)- A 30 min. lesson each week. This indicates
approximately one-half of the above commitment, or ca. 5-6 hours per week.
Non-Credit(Music90T) - A one hour (60 min.) lesson each
week). A serious student, generally a non-major. Practice levels should
be similar to the above 2-credit level, but not as intense.
Non-credit(Music90N) - A 30 min. lesson each week. The
least amount of commitment necessary. 5 hours per week. Daily routine recommended. Student
should undertake less material.
4 Credits(Music90-C) - A one hour lesson each week. Highest
level of commitment. Ca. 3-4 hours practice per day. Course open to Performance Majors
only at Junior and Senior levels.
GRADING POLICY - Each lesson is graded based on the following criteria:
(1) the amount and quality of preparation
(2) the amount of progress
(3) the level of performance
(4) the amount of progress on standard technical patterns
(5) participation in chamber music, orchestra, and attendance at events related to the students instrument. (N.B. Band is required, for music majors but extra credit is given for chamber ensembles or other major ensembles (in addition to band).
A progress report may be requested by the student at any time. Students who are doing poorly will receive a verbal warning early in the term. (Poorly is deemed to be a grade below C). A written report, email, etc., will be sent after a second warning is given.
ATTENDANCE POLICY - It is expected that you will be present at each lesson. If you cannot be present, you need to call me ASAP. If the situation is exigent, call me at home (230-3538) and at the office (294-2117). Please understand that it is impossible for me to utilize your scheduled time for anyone else if you cancel without any advance notice. For your convenience, I have machines at both numbers. For makeups, you need to call me ASAP to arrange a time. If I cannot be present for your lesson time, I will call you to schedule a makeup. If you miss a lesson and fail to call, it will not be made up (except in an emergency). Each student has the option of having one lesson each term to be deemed as a "no-grade" lesson. It will be the students responsibility to inform the instructor of this lesson status before the lesson begins. The student may opt to take the lesson without grade, or forfeit the lesson completely.
JURIES - At the end of the Fall and Winter Terms, all students taking for credit must take a jury. A jury is equivalent to a final exam in an applied music course. The jury will consist of a panel of music faculty (three or more) and the student who will play standard technical patterns (scales et al) and a prepared piece. An accompanist may be used but is not required.
REPERTORY - All students are encouraged to build repertory from various studies, solos, and ensembles. Each student has considerable flexibility in his/her choice of repertory. There are many opportunities to use these pieces in studio recitals, student recitals, Junior and Senior recitals, chamber music concerts, competitions within Furman or outside Furman, and auditions for orchestral positions. It is the student's responsibility to keep a list of repertory covered in each term. This repertory report is to be given to the instructor or the jury committee at the end of each term. It is suggested that each student maintain a list of repertory covered so that it can be included in a resume (future reference).
STUDIO CLASS - Required of all majors. Class will meet most Thursdays at 3:05. One absence will be allowed. Non-credit students are encouraged to attend. The intent of the class is to supplement each students knowledge through observation and participation. A familial atmosphere.
RECITALS, CONCERTS, ETC. - It is expected that all students will attend recitals, lectures, and masterclasses by faculty, students, and visiting artists who appear at Furman or in the immediate Greenville area. It is especially important when these events feature your instrument. All of these events are LEARNING SITUATIONS AND WILL COMPLEMENT YOUR STUDY OF THE INSTRUMENT. Therefore, attendance is expected and it is part of your applied music study.
TO ASSIST WITH COMMUNICATION, ALL STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO CHECK FOR MESSAGES ON MY DOOR (DMB 116) AND CHECK YOUR EMAIL EACH DAY.
