Mapping the Republic.
View a Map of North America (1825) from Tanner's World Atlas (1825), on the David Rumsey Maps website, paying particular attention to how the Texas/Mexico/California border, the Oregon/Canada border, and the Maine border differ from the current borders of the United States. Read the brief introduction to the history of the U.S. Rectangular Survey (and optionally their explanation of the survey's mechanics and the Louisiana modification on the National Atlas of the United States website.

Thursday (9/27)

Grassroots Politics and Jacksonian Leadership.
Read Ayers, American Passages, Chapter 10: Years of Andrew Jackson, 1829-1836. Use the SHDB search tool to produce a list of all events in our database from these same years. How closely does our list match the events and topics described in the textbook? What patterns and relationships does the SHDB show that are not revealed in the text? Is there any significance to the geographic patterns shown on the SHDB results map? What are the comparative strengths and weaknesses of the textbook account versus the SHDB?

Members of the BLUE group will need to post comments to the Course Discussion Board before class.

Friday (9/28)

The Second Party System as a Problem in Space and Times.
Read the Encyclopedia Britannica's biographies of F.J. Turner and Arthur Schlesinger, Jr..
Analyze the maps of County-Level Congressional Voting, 1840-1852. Look at the patterns of Whig strength. (You may find it helpful to step through the sequence of maps several times, looking at one particular state or sub-region at a time.) Do these areas of Whig dominance bear any relationship to major waterways, major cities, areas of industrialization, or areas of agricultural development? Judging from the maps, were the Whigs more popular in one region of the U.S. than another? Did that balance change over time?

Your revised list of SHDB "top" events will need to be posted to the database before class time today.

Members of the PURPLE group will need to post comments to the Course Discussion Board before class.
