Read Burton, Age of Lincoln, chapter twelve. View the cartoon and read the description from the Colfax Massacre Page at Harpweek. Read the excerpted section from James S. Pike, The Prostrate State. Read the report of the select U.S. Congressional Committee, Mississippi in 1875. You may optionally read the court case of U.S. v. Cruickshank, 92 U.S. 542 (1876).


Wednesday (5/14)

The Gospel of Prosperity,
Read Burton, Age of Lincoln, chapter thirteen. You may optionally browse through materials about the Labor Strike of 1877 from the "Railroads and the Making of Modern America" website at the U. of Nebraska.


Thursday (5/15)

The Economic Crisis of the 1870s and the Compromise of 1877.
Read the UH Digital History accounts of The End of Reconstruction and the Disputed Presidential Election of 1876.


Friday (5/16)

Disfranchisement and Segregation.
