Finish reading Andrew Billingsley, Yearning to Breathe Free: Robert Smalls of South Carolina and his Families in preparation for our discussion in class today.

Group 3's comparative book review of the Billingsley and Burton books are due in class today. See the analytical review essay guidelines for specific requirements.


Tuesday (5/20)

The International and Commercial Dimensions of the Civil War.
Search Google using the search term "Hotels, Gettysburg." Search Google using the search term "American Civil War, Ph.D." Google the search term "number of full-time employees national battlefield parks" Use Mapquest's "get directions" function to figure out how many miles it is from Rockville, Maryland to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. At 42 cents per mile, how much would it cost to drive from one to the other and back? In 2005, 1,798,820 people visited Gettysburg Military Park. Assuming Rockville is a representative distance for these trips and that there were on average two people per car, what can we (ballpark) estimate was the total transportation expenditure associated with this park alone?
