Read Don Doyle, Nations Divided before class begins. Please post some brief comments to the course discussion board.


Wednesday (9/27)

Trans-Atlantic Perceptions.
Read Paula Gemme, Domesticating Foreign Struggles. Group A will submit review essays based on the Doyle and Gemme books to the discussion board by Tuesday, Sept. 26. Each individual in Group B will serve as lead commentator on a specific essay. (assignments TBA).


Wednesday (10/4)

Concepts of Identity and History.
Read John McCardell, The Idea of a Southern Nation.

Group B will write essays and group A will comment.


Wednesday (10/11)

Theories of Nationalism.
Your book assignment for this week will be determined at our first class meeting. You will read either Benedict Anderson, Imagined Communities or Ernest Gellner, Nations and Nationalism. You will not be expected to write a full paper this week, but should post some general comments to the course discussion board by Tuesday afternoon and will be expected to read the other postings..


Wednesday (10/18)

Individual Views.
You will read one book-length biography and four additional biographical essays. Your essay posting will be both descriptive and analytical. It will need to provide a brief summary of the lives of your assigned individuals (no more than 100 words for each person) and a comparative analysis of what they mean when viewed collectively. You will need to report on your research process as well, including specifics about what sources you chose to use and how you worked through the investigation process. All participants will submit papers.

    The Literary View of the Confederate Experience.
    Read Margaret Mitchell, Gone with the Wind.

    You will not have a full paper due this week but you will be expected to post and read general comments. You will also need to post a paragraph or so giving a prospectus of your final project or paper.


    Wednesday (11/1)

    The Literary View of Italy's Unification Experience.
    Read Giuseppe di Lampedusa, The Leopard.

    Group A will write papers and Group B will comment.


    Wednesday (11/8)

    The Primary Record.
    You will be assigned a specific document set to read, as well as a scavenger list of topics or issues to locate on your own. The exercise instructions are available here.


    Wednesday (11/15)

    The Lost Cause in Historical Myth and Memory.
    Read Gaines Foster, Ghosts of the Confederacy.

    Group B will write papers and Group A will comment.


    Wednesday (11/29)

    Exhibit Design and the Uses of Historical Nationalism.
    Read through all of the topics on local history exhibit design on the Wisconsin Historical Society's "Exhibiting Local Heritage" pages. Then walk through the virtual tour of exhibit rooms at the National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento. You should concentrate on the images, but you can get crude translations of the page from Altavista Translator.
    Read the article by Claudio Fogu, "Fascism and Historic Representation: The 1932 Garibaldian Celebrations," Journal of Contemporary History 31 (April 1996), 317-345.
