The Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning (CTEL) is a newly established center that consolidates and builds on Furman University’s commitment to and support of faculty, students and engaged learning. In 2006, CTEL will be hiring a team of four Instructional Development Consultants (IDC) to support faculty and curricular development through affiliation with each of Furman’s four academic divisions: Fine Arts, Humanities, Sciences and Mathematics, and Social Sciences. Candidates will hold a PhD or other terminal degree and have faculty and curricular development experience, pedagogical and technological expertise, and the desire to be part of team working to build a vibrant faculty development initiative, support an emergent community of SoTL scholars and establish a new Center.
IDC Position Responsibilities: Position works directly with Furman faculty and the leadership and staff of the Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning (CTEL) to provide collaborative development, consultation, and support for innovative courses, instructional materials, and pedagogies. Works with other members of the CTEL, the Libraries, and the Computing and Information Systems (C&IS) Department as appropriate to support campus-wide curricular initiatives and/or related academic projects and initiatives to support effective teaching and engaged learning at Furman. Provides professional-level, collaborative expertise and direct consultative support to faculty in their development as facilitators of engaged learning, scholars, and researchers. Assists in periodic assessment of needs of faculty in their designated academic division and develops and provides training to faculty in new instructional technologies and active and innovative pedagogies. Researches and shares knowledge of new instructional approaches, software, and hardware that promote the development of new and effective course curricula within their affiliated disciplines. Supports training and development for student consultants affiliated with CTEL and, where appropriate, academic support staff. Creates and disseminates related online and hardcopy reference materials in support of training and faculty development. Coordinate with the Academic Computing Specialists in delivery of standard software suite training for academic departments within their affiliated division, as appropriate. Contributes to the monitoring and reporting of CTEL accomplishments, faculty and student participation and outcomes and impact of training and support. According to interests and expertise, may assume responsibility for coordinating key CTEL initiatives, assume team teaching and/or periodic course teaching responsibilities within their discipline. Through collaboration with CTEL team, assists in facilitating and developing the communications function of the CTEL through website(s), blogs, and other digital media. Works to identify, share and promote innovative examples of effective teaching and curricula with the Furman community and through other professional and public fora. These positions work independently and as a team and report directly to the Assistant Academic Dean for the Center for Teaching and Engaged Learning.
General Education/Experience Required: Doctorate/Terminal degree in a relevant discipline together with Masters, coursework, and/or experience preferred in some combination of the following areas: Instructional Design/Instructional Technology, Adult Education, or other related educational degree(s). Two to five years of full-time higher education teaching experience (or equivalent); Experience working with faculty development, instructional consultation and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) preferred; Demonstrated experience and skill in designing and implementing creative, effective, active and technology-enhanced instruction; enthusiasm for working collaboratively with faculty to explore and to realize their pedagogical and scholarly goals; broad and current knowledge of concepts, issues, and literature informing innovative instructional practices and the use of technology to enhance learning; and facility with both PC and Macintosh operating platforms. Understanding and appreciation for interdisciplinary interactions a plus. Facility with open source operating systems and software, image management and basic database design, advanced web design, multimedia production and/or modeling software, pedagogical applications of wireless technologies, and knowledge/experience working with related concepts, policies and concerns in higher education (intellectual property, fair use, etc.) are also desirable. - The IDC – Fine Arts will support faculty and curricular development within the Fine Arts (Art, Music, Theater Arts). Provides professional-level leadership, collaborative support, consultation and development for technology needs (audio, video, graphics, web, etc. to faculty in the Fine Arts (and related academic divisions, as appropriate). Education / Experience Required: Doctorate or other terminal degree in one of the Fine Arts preferred, Masters acceptable. Comparable professional experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Five years experience with appropriate technologies in the Fine Arts (software and hardware). Experience with current digital technologies and with using and troubleshooting audio, video, and graphics equipment across platforms. Demonstrated expertise in digital audio and video recording and post-production, digital graphics and 3D Modeling and digital archive management highly desirable. Also desirable is enthusiasm for working collaboratively with faculty to explore and realize their creative goals; broad and current knowledge of concepts, issues, and literature in the use of technology to enhance creativity in the Fine Arts. - The IDC – Humanities will support faculty and curricular development within the Humanities (Classics, Communication, English, History, Languages and Literatures, Philosophy, or Religion). Provides support and consultation, working with faculty to support students and promote interactive learning, presentation, team collaboration, and critical/interactive writing skills development. Provide expertise and support for specialized software relevant to the Humanities and related academic divisions. Education / Experience Required: Doctorate in a discipline associated with the Humanities, together with Masters, coursework, and/or experience preferred in relevant areas (as described above). Expertise in the analysis, effective visualization and management of information is desirable, as is knowledge of specific software, programming and/or scripting languages relevant to applications used in the Humanities (e.g. simulations, Flash, image database management, etc.). - The IDC – Sciences and Mathematics will support faculty and curricular development within the Sciences and Mathematics (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics). Provides professional-level leadership, collaborative expertise, and consultation for course design and training support for specialized software (e.g., statistical packages, visualization software) within the sciences and in related academic divisions, as appropriate. Education / Experience Required: Doctorate and Masters (and/or BS or experience) preferred in some combination of the following areas: Instructional Design/Instructional Technology, Science/Math, Adult Education, or other related educational degree(s). Expertise in the effective visualization of quantitative information is highly desirable, as is knowledge of specific software, programming and/or scripting languages relevant to applications used in the sciences (e.g. GIS, SAS, SPSS, and simulations, PHP, Java, etc.).
