Additional Concerns:
These are field courses and that means
living in the field! It is that aspect that makes this course
exciting and different. Other study abroad programs at Furman are
definitely more oriented toward metropolitan activities. If you
are going to learn field biology, you have to get out-of-doors and
"touch the earth." The stations vary from being plush (for a field
station) to being rustic (although adequate). We will be
camping for a few days in South Africa. Students must not be
simply tolerant but rather enthusiastic about these conditions.
We will travel light, and each of us will carry all
of our personal gear in a duffel bag. You will get dirty! -- but
then, so will everyone else. An equipment list will be provided,
but other than a good raincoat, hiking boots, sleeping bag, sleeping
pad, and snorkeling mask and fins -- you probably already have
everything.
