Due the last day of classes (Friday, 2/20)
Instructions:
Compose a 4-part chorale in the style of J.S. Bach, but with unison rhythms
and no non-harmonic tones.
Choose a key, mode, and meter.
Your chorale will consist of 2 phrases, in an "Antecedent - Consequent" relationship
- The first phrase starts on I (i) and ends with a half cadence.
- The second phrase starts on I (i), uses some of the same material as
the first phrase, and ends with a perfect authentic cadence.
You must use at least one example of each of the following techniques:
- An expanded tonic through bass arpeggiation
- Voice exchange between soprano and bass
- A passing chord
- A neighboring chord
You must include at least one of example of each of the following chords:
- vii06
- V6
- V4/2 (dominant seventh in 3rd inversion)
- IV or ii6 (If in minor: iv or ii06)
Copy your chorale neatly, in ink (or use a computer notation program
and print it). Put soprano and alto in the treble clef, tenor and bass in
the bass clef, stems pointing in the correct direction. Be sure to vertically
align all parts. Indicate a tempo, add some dynamic markings.
All chorales will be sung in class. Get together in groups of study partner teams to practice. Piano accompaniment is acceptable; extra credit if sung "a cappella."
